An input-output-based hybrid analysis method was used to account for embodied energy. This study shows the importance of embodied energy may be underestimated. ![]() The reconfigured façade permutations were tested against a Base Case for overall life cycle energy performance by tracking operational and embodied energy. The façade improvements include real-time adjustments to venetians through a building automation system which tracks changes in weather and luminance. Such glazing orientation also maximises solar control opportunities. This building is representative of a significant proportion of office stock and was chosen for its high level of equator and west facing glazing. Such considerations of HVAC and façade were carried out for an office building in Melbourne, Australia to be retrofitted with active chilled beams. At this point, the design of the HVAC system and façade improvements, which both mitigate the thermal effects of solar radiation, can be carried out jointly. ![]() When the existing Heating Ventilation and Cooling (HVAC) system in an existing highly glazed office building is reaching the end of its life, it is also an opportunity for adding solar controls to the façade. This study aims to demonstrate how an existing building envelope that responds to its daily environmental conditions can influence office façade refurbishment practice, while still returning a net energy saving.
